CLUB NEWS APRIL 2024

We are all deeply saddened by the death of our colleague and Committee member Quentin Haslam earlier this month.  We are grateful to Trevor Warren for taking his place on the Committee and on the Handicaps and Competitions Committee.

At last the weather has improved and we are back on grass tees!  Many thanks to Rich Price and the team for all the work they have done to get the course into such great shape so early in the season.

CHARITY FUNDRAISING 2023-24

During the past year, our various efforts have raised £1950 for our three charities – the Pied Piper Appeal, the Air Ambulance and the colorectal fund of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity, each of which have received £650.  In addition, the Air Ambulance will receive an additional £500 from a one-off donation, so Steve Yemm will be able to present a cheque for £1150 to the Air Ambulance after the May medal on Saturday, May 11th.

We have received the thanks below from the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity.

Dear Rodway Hill Golf Club ,

Thanks to your kind support, our local hospitals can do more to care for you, everyone you love and our passionate NHS staff.

Your gift of £650.00 to Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity will make a real difference.

By supporting our Colorectal fund, you are helping to fund projects that make a positive change for local patients and staff. From state-of-the-art equipment, transforming the hospital environment, supporting our incredible staff to specialist care; you can help touch the lives of nearly every person in Gloucestershire.

Thanks to donations, the latest Scanning equipment is helping over 40,000 patients every single year; providing faster diagnosis and more effective treatment. Donations also help support our amazing NHS staff when they need it most with specialist mental health and wellbeing support.

New green spaces, funded by donations, such as our Commemorative Garden give staff, patients and visitors a calm and tranquil area to relax, recharge and enjoy some time away from the hospital environment.

Donations, fundraising, gifts in wills and community support all help to fund projects like this and much more across our hospitals every month.

None of this work would be possible without you, thank you for your generous donation.

Yours sincerely,
Imogen Horgan

Charity Assistant
Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity

CLUB MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

A reminder that it is time to pay your CLUB subscription of £35, which is due by 31st March.  You can pay it in one of four ways:

  • By Standing Order, which many members already do. If this applies to you, you need do nothing more.  If you would like to set up a standing order, please ask at the desk in the clubhouse for an application form which contains the relevant section for you to take to your bank.
  • By BACS to transfer to our Club account – the details are Account Name: Rodway Hill Golf Club; Sort Code 30-90-09; Account Number 48093168. Please use your name as the reference.
  • By cash or by cheque (made out to Rodway Hill Golf Club) which you can leave in the competitions box in the clubhouse.

We prefer Standing Order or BACS payments please as it minimises administration.

Please note that of your £35, approximately £10 is paid as an affiliation fee to England Golf, £14 for men and £13 for women as an affiliation fee to Gloucestershire Golf Unions and £4 for the subscription to How Did I Do to maintain your Handicap.  The remaining £7 is used to support club events and activities, pay for members playing in regional competitions and administration costs. The subscription has been unchanged for 20 years, despite the rising costs of affiliations.

IF YOU HAVE NOT PAID YOUR MEMBERSHIP BY 30th APRIL, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY IN ANY CLUB COMPETITION/S UNTIL YOUR MEMBERSHIP IS PAID.

The benefits of Club membership:

  • AN OFFICIAL GOLF HANDICAP UNDER THE WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM. The Club maintains the record of handicaps and our software enables you to record your scores and have your handicap index updated. This enables you to play at Rodway and other courses using the correct playing handicap based on each course’s slope rating.
  • ON-COURSE INSURANCE IN THE CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. Membership of the Club provides affiliation to England Golf, which in turn provides insurance for you when you are playing. It provides personal liability insurance for golf club members in the event that they are held liable for injuring someone or causing serious property damage at a golf facility. The cover is provided for members playing at any club in the UK. There is no excess in respect of personal injury claims, and a £500 excess in respect of damage to third party property. Note that this does NOT cover your clubs or equipment, which are normally covered by home insurance.
  • REDUCED GREEN FEES AT COURSES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. Club members are affiliated to Gloucestershire Golf Union, which provides you with a County Card – now provided through an app on your phone – that entitles you to reduced green fees throughout the country.
  • THE CHANCE TO PLAY IN COMPETITIONS AND TEAMS AT RODWAY HILL. Club members can play in Club competitions and roll-ups, and represent the Club in matches with other Clubs.

Once you have paid your membership, you will receive an e-mail confirming this.  You will then be able to collect a Club Fixture List from the pigeon holes above the competition box in the club house.  It will have your name on it and be in the correct alphabetic section.  We will no longer be issuing stickers to go on bags, or anything else to confirm your membership, as we can keep a check on things through How Did I Do?

If you have any questions, please contact Club Treasurer Bob Wolfson ([email protected])

COMPETITION RESULTS

SPRING FOURSOMES

Congratulations to the winners of the Spring Foursomes Mike Robinson and Craig Straughan and to runners-up James Clayton and Bradley Robinson.

Unfortunately the April medal had to be cancelled, but we have managed to rearrange the NAPGC UK competition for May 18th.

CLUB POLICIES

The Committee has recently revised its Disciplinary Procedure and its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy.  These, together with the Club’s other key policies, can be found on the Club tab of the website, and members are urged to update themselves on these matters.

COMPETITION FEES

In the light of the rising costs of engraving, sign-writing and trophies, the entry fee for mens and seniors competitions will rise to £4 for single round competitions and £8 for multi-round competitions from 1 April 2024.  This will enable us to continue to provide worthwhile credit prizes in the shop, which otherwise will be shrinking away.

WHS REVISED HANDICAP ALLOWANCES

You will have discovered that as a result of  WHS adding course rating minus par to the existing formula for working out course handicaps (which will bring us in line with other countries), your COURSE HANDICAP has been reduced.  The new chart is on the board immediately beside the entrance to the Clubhouse.  Note that your Handicap Index remains unchanged – it’s the COURSE handicap that’s changed.
