RODWAY HILL GOLF CLUB    JANUARY 2020 NEWS

A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MEMBERS, AND HERE’S HOPING FOR A REALLY GOOD YEAR OF GOLF!

STARTERS’ HUT

Very many thanks to Club Captain Paul Stevens and member John Bick for putting up the Starters’ hut. It will shortly be painted, and we hope that it will help our noble volunteer starters to stay warm and dry while ensuring prompt and effective starts to competitions.

CLUB CODE OF CONDUCT

In line with England Golf advice, the Committee has now approved a Code of Conduct for players, which is displayed below – please read it and ensure that you abide by it. It is designed to ensure that everyone’s experience of golfing at Rodway is a positive one.

In spite of the weather, we have managed to play Stableford competitions in both December and January. The results were as follows

December:

Division 1 – Billy Russell (£7 voucher); runner-up Simon Glastonbury (£5)

Division 2 – Gary Brown (£10 and overall winner); runner-up Matthew Loy (£7); third – Hanif Bhula (£3)

Division 3 – Rob Schmitz (£5)

January:

Division 1 – Paul Callard (£15 voucher and overall winner); runner-up Dave Brown (£10); third Chris Nicholas

Division 2 – Bob Preston (£15); runner-up Michael Ogden (£10); third – Hanif Bhula (£5)

Division 3 – Kevin Thomas (£10); runner-up Steve Day (£5)

CLUB WELFARE OFFICER AND CLUB SECRETARY

The Committee are pleased to report that they have been able to take forward the appointment of a Club Welfare Officer – more details next month.

We do though still need a Club Secretary. The job is a lot smaller than it used to be, and we are keen to continue bringing new members forward to positions of responsibility, rather than relying on a few long-serving people. If you would like to know more about what it entails, please contact Bob Wolfson on 01452 790831 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

Memberships need to be renewed before the end of March. Many members have already set up standing orders for their £35 subscriptions. This is really helpful to us, as it saves volunteers having to check up money or cheques, pay it into the bank etc etc. If you don’t currently pay by Standing Order, please consider it and, if you are willing to do it, ask your bank to set it up. Alternatively, if you don’t want to pay by Standing Order, you can make a BACS transfer to pay. (We are very 21st century now…) Our bank details are:

Account name: Rodway Hill Golf Club   Sort code: 30-90-09 Account number: 48093168

If you reading this on a noticeboard, get your phone out, take a picture of it, and it’s all easy! Please make sure you put your name as the reference on any BACS payment.

CALENDAR FOR 2020-21

You will receive a personal copy of the 2020-21 Calendar (April-March) when you renew your membership. If you need to find dates before that, they are on the website calendar (go to Club News and then Events Calendar on the drop down menu), and we will post paper copies of them at the Clubhouse, to help with your advanced planning.

CLUB BALANCE SHEET FOR 2019

The Club’s financial position remains strong. You can see a copy of the Balance Sheet on the Club News website. Alternatively, if you want your own copy, please contact the Club Treasurer Bob Wolfson (details above).

WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM

England Golf have announced that the changeover date to the new system will be at the beginning of November 2020 – just over a year away. It represents a significant change and we will be providing more details as time goes on. The headlines are:

  1. instead of a fixed handicap, players will have a ‘Handicap Index’ which will be adjusted depending on the level of difficulty (called the ‘slope’) of the course and the tees that you are playing off on any particular day
  2. that Handicap Index will be determined by your best 8 qualifying scores in the last 20 rounds you have played
  3. it is expected that all stroke play (medal, stableford, medalford) rounds you play individually, whether in a formal competition or a roll-up or social play, will be recorded and will contribute to the calculation of your Handicap Index

The most recent outline from England Golf, including a short explanatory video, can be found at the website whs.com

RODWAY HILL GOLF CLUB - CODE OF CONDUCT

Rodway Hill Golf Club is committed to providing an environment that is free from discrimination, harassment and intimidation for members and employees.

Members are advised that an acceptable standard of behaviour is expected in all areas of the Club and Course at all times and that upon payment of membership, all members give their consent to be bound by both the restrictions and penalties which may be imposed, for any breach of the Club’s standards, or serious misconduct, in failing to meet the standards set in this Code of Conduct.

This Code of Conduct has been set by the Committee and adopted as a Permanent Local Rule, as permitted by Rule 1.2b of the Rules of Golf.

ON THE COURSE

All golfers must:

Avoid slow play and apply the principles of Ready Golf by:

  • maintaining the pace of play by keeping up with the group in front. Your place is behind the group in front of you and not ahead of the group behind you.
  • waving through the following group when delayed by for example searching for balls

Adhere to the Rules of Golf, Local Rules and the General and Specific Terms of Competition.

Care for the Course by repairing pitch marks, replacing divots and raking bunkers.

Show respect towards their fellow golfers by not being aggressive, abusive, noisy or misusing equipment, show respect towards employees and officials and be aware that greens staff have priority.

IN THE CLUHOUSE

Members must be aware that:

Any form of discrimination, harassment or intimidation is regarded as unacceptable behaviour.

The use of foul or abusive language has no place in the clubhouse.

Smoking or the use of e-cigarettes is not permitted within the Club buildings.

Whilst acknowledging that adult “banter” contributes towards creating a healthy atmosphere among members, care should be taken as some members may find it offensive or intimidating.

GENERAL

This Code of Conduct is not intended to create a bureaucratic, regulatory environment, but rather to promote and enhance the values of the Club.

Any member engaging in any behaviour that may be detrimental to the game of golf or Rodway Hill Golf Club, is in breach of the Code of Conduct and should be reported to the Committee. Any reported transgressions shall be scrutinised by the Disciplinary Committee, who may take appropriate disciplinary action.

Club Committee, January 2020.

NOTES FROM SENIORS AGM MEETING

Monday 20th January 2020

APOLOGIES: Tom Lane. Bob Wolfson, Gerald Kidd, Denis Kerr, Hamish Mclean

PRESENT: Stephen Pound, Gerry Payton, Dave Matthews, Tom Curtis, Eric Chitty, John Lewis, Ken Roffey, Mike Warren, Cyril Amos, Quentin Haslam, Adrian Haines, Tudor Williams, Malcolm Gray, Ian Dickie-Clark. Jon Cockerill.

CAPTAINS REVIEW 2019 SEASON

The retiring captain Gerry Payton began by asking “has this season been successful”? His view was that it had, our performance in club matches improved throughout the season winning all but one of our last seven matches. We were runners up in the 3 counties league and in 2020 will host the end of season event.

In total for the season we played 18 matches, won 8, drew 1 and lost 9.

No fewer than 31 different players turned out for the matches. In terms of competition winners and runners up 14 members gained trophies. He said it has been a privilege to act as seniors captain and had thoroughly enjoyed his year.

Gerry then expressed his thanks to all those who contributed to making it such a pleasure namely the committee, Mike Warren for looking after our finances and organising the Christmas Lunch. Also, to Dave Matthews and Hamish Mclean for deputising for him at some matches and to Eric Chitty for his experience and encouragement. Finally, to Ian Dickie-Clark and Gerald Kidd for organising the roll ups throughout the year.

Gerry said the most demanding job was to organise a team of 12 for the matches and expressed his Particular thanks to those who had participated in a large number of the matches, namely Stephen Pound, Dave Matthews, Quentin Haslam, John Lewis and especially Hamish Mclean who played in all 18 matches.

ELECTION OF 2020 SENIORS COMMITTEE

The following people were elected to the committee with no opposition.

                               Captain:         Dave Matthews

                                Vice-Captain: Ken Roffey

                               Secretary:      Gerry Payton

                               Finance:        Mike Warren

Committee:   Tom Lane, John Lewis, Eric Chitty. Tom Curtis. Cyril Amos

OUTLINE PROGRAMME FOR 2020

The incoming captain Dave Matthews began by saying it was a pleasure to be elected this years’

Seniors Captain.

He is proposing to introduce a new event namely the Senior Captain and Pro challenge. Any pair

can challenge them to a match playing off full handicap and off Yellow Tees the cost for

Challengers would be £20 for the pair. For those that beat the Captain and Pro there will be a

prize of a meal voucher for the Rodway Restaurant with a bottle of wine.

This year the County Seniors Stableford and the Mitchell Thompson Trophy will be restored to our

fixtures. Also, this year there will be two Seniors K/O and Plate competitions, one played off

White Tees and the second off Yellow Tees. Members can decide which competition this wish to

play in or play in both if they so wish.

There will be two away days this year, the “Seniors Away Day” will be to Burghill Golf Club on 9th

July. The second “Senior Captains Away Day” will be to Wharton Park on August 4th.

David confirmed all our Matches for this year. He had been in contact with other clubs to try and

arrange some new venues, but this as yet has been unsuccessful.

He concluded by hoping everyone enjoys our golf this year and if anyone has any questions or a

problem to not hesitate to ask him or a member of the committee to sort it. There will also be a

few other club events going on so please do join in.

PROPOSALS SUBMITTED BY SENIOR MEMBERS

Ian Dickie-Clark asked why did we have a chargeable raffle at the Christmas Lunch why are the

seniors raising money and what is it used for?

Mike Warren explained that we use the money toward wine for the tables at Christmas Lunch and

that we also invite Alan, Vic and Richard to our lunch as a thank you for their work and support,

which the senior’s funds pay for.   We have also paid for any food for the Seniors Scratch

competition opponents when playing at Rodway and Mitchell Thompson opposing team food.

Ian said he was happy with explanation.

There being no further business the meeting closed at 14.20pm

NOTES ON THE ACCOUNTS FOR 2019

Introduction

There have been some challenges in completing the accounts for 2019, resulting from the closure of the NatWest account, the opening of a new account with Lloyds and the winding-up of the company.

In addition, the Treasurer and Committee are now able to present the accounts in a way that better demonstrates to members how their money has been spent. This is achieved by showing the accounts in four sections:

  1. Income from subscriptions and other sources and spending against that income – chiefly affiliation fees.
  2. Income from competition entries and spending on prizes and related items, such as signwriting for the honours boards.
  3. Charity income
  4. Seniors activities – the Club account is used as a holding account for these activities (away trip/s and Christmas dinner) so the income and expenditure must balance.

Further, by providing a sub-total below items 1 and 2, members can better see how their subscriptions have been spent.

Notes on income

  1. Membership was up this year – to 214, our highest for a number of years – providing additional income.
  2. Clothing – the Committee decided to subsidise team shirts for the Men’s and Seniors teams, taking an income of only £10 per person, totalling £330.
  3. Competition income – in 2018, Ladies’ income was shown as a net rather than gross figure.

Notes on expenditure

  1. Affiliation fees – this expenditure also includes 6 refunds of memberships, five of which were double paid and one to a leaving member. Affiliation fees amount to £9 per member for England Golf and £13.55 (Men) or £11.50 (Ladies) to Gloucestershire Golf Union, leaving around £12.50 per member for all other Club related expenditure. Taking out Life Members, this provides almost exactly £2500 of income.
  2. Clothing – this line shows that the members’ subscriptions subsidised the team shirts to £556 - £17 per player who purchased a shirt.
  3. Club events/socials – in 2018, the costs of refreshments at the AGM and Presentation Night were shown as Socials; in 2019, the AGM is shown as a CLUB EVENT and presentation night costs are included under that heading.
  4. Admin costs include all aspects of club expenditure and are higher this year as they include a day of training on ‘How Did I Do?’ (£372).
  5. Capital costs include the purchase and erection of the starters’ hut (£533) and of seniors’ blazer badges to cover the next eight years (£186).
  6. The competition costs in 2018 included the purchase of medals for the next ten years. The income from competitions covered all the costs of prizes, vouchers and trophies, the signwriting of the honours boards and refreshments on Presentation Night.
  7. Charity - £3000 was donated to Hope to Tomorrow (Leo Lucas’ charity) and £114 to the British Legion. Just under £3000 is currently held for the current Captains’ charity, the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Notes on balances

  1. While the bank balances show an excess of income over expenditure, this is explained by the current holding of funds for the Captains’ charity. Comparison of the sub-total figures shows that expenditure this year exceeded income from subscriptions and competition entries by £216, reducing the Club’s carry forward to a little under £13000.
