BIG CHANGES TO HANDICAPS COMING IN 2020…..

From January 2020, we will, in line with England Golf’s joining the World Handicapping System, be changing the way all handicaps (in future to be known as stroke allowances) are calculated.  In essence, instead of players’ handicaps being calculated on the basis of their performance in qualifying competitions, handicaps will be based on the best eight of the last twenty rounds played in all stableford and medal formats, including roll-ups.

In preparation for this, we are doing a number of things:

  • We have introduced the ‘Monday Cup’ for Seniors, so that every Monday between April and July Seniors’ rounds are played as qualifiers – you can see the results on the website.
  • In July or August, we are buying a touchscreen to be placed in the shop so that players can enter their own scores on the completion of (qualifying) rounds.  We hope this will get players used to doing this, and that it will help them build up at least 20 scores before January 20202, so their new handicaps are based on these rounds.  The job of the Handicap secretary will change to be more of an oversight and monitoring role, as s/he cannot be expected to enter the volume of scores that there will be.

THE CLUB CONSTITUTION

Following the decision at the AGM to wind up the Company, the Committee are now working on what the future organisation of the Club should look like. They are considering a constitution and some of the issues that they will be seeking the views of members on are:

  • Should there be new Life Members, and if so on what criteria should they be chosen? And/or should there be free membership for Club Captain/s, perhaps offset by reducing the size of the gift with which they are presented?
  • Subscriptions – should we move the subscription year to March rather than January? Should we impose a surcharge (£5 per month was suggested) for late renewers?
  • Should the Ladies and Seniors Sections be allowed to hold their own bank accounts, especially for the administration of away days and other events?
  • Should we write into the Constitution that there should be a certain percentage of each gender on the Committee?
  • Should the agenda of the AGM, and the list of who is standing for officer or Committee positions, be sent out by e-mail or post to each member, or simply be posted in the Clubhouse and on the website? And should those not able to attend the meeting be entitled to vote by proxy?
  • Should we change our financial year from being the calendar year to being the financial year?  Should our accounts be audited or otherwise checked?

Over the summer, we will put the proposed constitution onto the website, and plan to hold an open meeting in September to discuss the final details of it.
