APRIL 2018 NEWS

COMPETITION RESULTS

Spring Foursomes:   There were 14 pairs entered, and once again Dan Hall & Warren Barnes won with a score of 43 points, winning on countback from Phil Gardner and Roy Hutchinson, with Leo Lucas & Paul Callard 3rd

The Men’s Winter League final between Phil Gardner/Dave Brown and Dan Hall/Warren Barnes will be played shortly.

The Seniors Winter Leaguewas won by Ian Dickie Clark and  Hamish McLean, with Adrian Haines and Cyril Amos runners-up.

Congratulations to the winners of the April monthly medal, shown below, together with the value of the vouchers they have won (which reflect the number of entries):

Division 1: Dan Hall (£20 and overall winners medal), Leo Lucas (£15) and Simon Glastonbury (£10)

Division 2: Brian Webb (£20), Ben Grieve (£15), Paul Callard (£10)

Division 3:  Martin Nicholls (£10), Denis Hynes (£5)

Well done to the 46 players who played in the competition when, despite the best efforts of Rich Price and his team, the course was pretty damp and at times it was tough to distinguish between balls and daisies!

At the most recent Committee meeting, it was agreed that players with handicaps above 28 would be allowed to play in Club competitions off their full handicap.  This decision will be kept under review.

The website section on club competitions has been updated and improved.  It includes details of how to enter and what the format is of all our competitions – please have a read of this as it will save you a lot of questions and uncertainty.

A REMINDER ON RULES ABOUT COMPETITIONS

The Committee would like to remind you of the following. In order to ensure that competitions run smoothly, especially Medals and others

taking place on Saturdays, players are expected to observe the following:

  1. Arrive and report to the starter at least ten minutes before your tee time.
  2. If the starter needs to do so to keep the numbers right, s/he will ask you to change your grouping and/or start time. You are required to follow such instructions.
  3. If you are unable to play in a competition for which you have signed up, please inform either the Handicap Secretary or the Clubhouse as far in advance as possible – if necessary, on the day.

If you do not follow the above, most obviously by simply not showing up, you will receive a letter or e-mail from the Club Secretary asking if there were any extenuating circumstances.  If there are not, you will receive one warning, after which you can expect to be barred from Club competitions for a period of time.

MENS MATCHES

The Harvington match has been postponed until 28thApril, with ideally the same team.

The Puckrup match was resounding victory for the team here, winning 6-0 at Rodway, the closest game being a 3&1 win for us.  Thanks particularly to Dan Hall for stepping in at the last minute.  We’re going back to Puckrup later in the year, and have discussed having a decider (it’s 1-1) on neutral ground between now and then.

Naunton Downs Match: A narrow defeat for the team, losing 3-2 at Rodway.  Three matches were decided on the 18thgreen! Well done again to those who took part – we’ll be playing a match at Naunton later in the season.

DAILY MAIL COMPETITIONS

In the Ladies, Ruth Onions and Sefton Hooton defeated Brickhampton in the first round, but lost to Cotswold Hills in the second.

In the Mens, Dan Hall and Warren Barnes beat Cotswold Hills in the first round and are due to play Minchinhampton in the second.

CLUB COMMITTEE

Many thanks to Sefton Hooton, who has agreed to fill the vacancy on the Club Committee.

THE CLUB CONSTITUTION

Following the decision at the AGM to wind up the Company, the Committee are now working on what the future organisation of the Club should look like. They are considering a constitution and some of the issues that they will be seeking the views of members on are:

  • Should there be new Life Members, and if so on what criteria should they be chosen? And/or should there be free membership for Club Captain/s, perhaps offset by reducing the size of the gift with which they are presented?
  • Subscriptions – should we move the subscription year to March rather than January? Should we impose a surcharge (£5 per month was suggested) for late renewers?
  • Should the Ladies and Seniors Sections be allowed to hold their own bank accounts, especially for the administration of away days and other events?
  • Should we write into the Constitution that there should be a certain percentage of each gender on the Committee?
  • Should the agenda of the AGM, and the list of who is standing for officer or Committee positions, be sent out by e-mail or post to each member, or simply be posted in the Clubhouse and on the website? And should those not able to attend the meeting be entitled to vote by proxy?
  • Should we change our financial year from being the calendar year to being the financial year?  Should our accounts be audited or otherwise checked?

SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR 2018

Subscriptions to the Club are now overdue.  Just in case you were wondering, this is what you get for your money:

  1. Affiliation to the English Golf Union, Gloucestershire Golf Union and National Association of Public Golf Courses. Through this, our members’ handicaps are officially recognised and enable you to play with a ‘live’ handicap on any course. Around two-thirds of your membership subscription is paid across in affiliation fees.
  2. Access to County Cards.  As members, we are entitled to  annual County Cards, which enable us to play at other courses, not just in Gloucestershire, for approximately half price green fees.
  3. Official handicaps and entry to club competitions. We organise a range of competitions for men, women and seniors, through which members get their competition handicaps that enable them to play with other golfers across the country.  The Master Scoreboard section of the website records all of our scores, and enables us to track our scores.
  4. An annual presentation evening and an Annual General Meeting, at which a drink and refreshments are provided to those who attend from the subscription income.
  5. Through a Committee of volunteers, we liaise with the course owners and managers to ensure that the views of the members are taken into account in course improvements and developments.
  6. An annual calendar of events and competitions is provided to each member, so that we know what is happening when. (These will be sent out at the end of January)
  7. Members are entitled to play for Club teams – we run Mens, Ladies and Seniors teams which play a range of matches and in other competitions.
